Backpack Program
We are partnering with a local church to offer the “Backpack Program” at McKinley again this year. This program is supported through generous donations from the community and provides families who are financially struggling with supplemental food items over the weekend at no cost to the family. Each Friday your child will be provided with a backpack to bring home which contains a variety of “kid-friendly” foods. These foods are planned to provide the children in the family with 2-3 weekend meals or snacks. The child will then return the empty backpack to school on Monday which will then be filled and ready to take home again on the following Friday. Leadership Opportunities
At McKinley School 4th and 5th grade students assist the janitors in helping keep our school clean and green by collecting the recycling materials from all the classrooms two times a week. This year 4th and 5th grade students will be referred by staff and invited to fill out an application to participate as a Recycling Hero at McKinley school. Candidates will participate in an orientation including the importance of recycling, a job description and character qualities required for the job. Students who are interested will complete their application and be offered an interview with Ms. Kleinschrodt and Mr. Olson. Click on the title to access an application form or contact me for more information  akleinschrodt@owatonna.k12.mn.us

Children's Dental Health Services
For the third year, Children’s Dental Health Services will be coming to McKinley on October 7th for their first visit and will be back again in the spring to follow up with the students they see in October. This service includes an exam, cleaning, fluoride treatment and sealants (if needed). Children can be treated at school without their parent present with written parental permission. This program is intended for children who do not have a dental provider, those without insurance, or for those experiencing financial hardship. If a student is on Medical Assistance programs this insurance covers the entire cost of the care. Otherwise those students who qualify for free/reduced lunches will qualify for Children’s Remedial Fund which will cover 80% of the care leaving the family with only $19.00 out of pocket expense. A consent for treatment must be filled out and signed by parent prior to the child
receiving services. Click on the title to access the form. Contact me for further information akleinschrodt@owatonna.k12.mn.us.
